Sr. Software Engineer, VP Talent Acquisition I was recently asked to make a presentation on what skills are needed to succeed in the management information system industry. It's not an easy task because SI is a very diverse field with many requirements that change upon different levels of engagement in business. Some people are already employed in SI while others might be starting out to graduate school for their Master's degree. To address this problem, I would like to take you on a tour through the different levels of engagement in SI. After make your presentation, you will be able to decide which level of SI career is right for you.The first level is entry-level positions. Entry-level positions are similar to internships where the company gives you a job for a specific purpose or project then provides training and development without any monthly salary or benefits. You can find these positions at high schools where students are able to be trained by experienced individuals in small areas like programming languages like Java, C++, Visual Basic etc. Or you can start this career at a trade school like DeVry University. As you move up to the middle-level of engagement, it is apparent that your daily activities and responsibilities will increase significantly. You will learn new methods and techniques that will allow you to manage and oversee the daily operations of IT. It is also common at this level for individuals to take on new roles such as an account manager, project manager, business continuity manager, director, VP level positions etc. In most cases, it is required that these individuals have a University degree in IT or MIS in order to be considered for these roles. Many people also decide to pursue their graduate degree at this time since management is very challenging. Once you reach the senior-level of engagement, your primary role will be to develop, manage and promote policies for your company. A common example of this is a Chief Information Officer (CIO). You will also be required to help transition into new technologies that will affect the long term goals for your company. Once you have decided which type of job and career is right for you, there are some things that you can do to prepare yourself: • Get training and experience: Taking on an internship in your university or high school can help build up your skills to qualify for jobs offered by companies. • Be a team player: It's important that you have the right attitude and the ability to work with other people. You will also need to have strong interpersonal skills that will allow you to communicate with other people, regardless of their background or position. • Learn about technology: In order to advance in your career, you will need to learn new technology as it comes out. You can do this by pursuing educational courses from your local college or university, but also from online training programs from a variety of sources. • Take on a leadership roles: An internship can help build-up your confidence and leadership skills which could lead you into a management track within your company or organization. 89cfa1e7782051
